NOTES

  1. Cronk Urleigh
  2. This is the second purchase involving a dwelling house in Douglas that John Mylrea made in less than a year
  3. His earlier purchase was from his step-daughter and he acquired a half share of a house in BIGWELL Street. He paid £60
  4. This purchase is for a small portion of a house in #9 JAMES Street for which he paid £20. It was probably the dwelling acquired by Jane McArdle (the mother of Emily Jelly) in 1845. Curiously this acquisition did not figure in John's Douglas dwellings listed in his 1887 will - although #12 James Street was
  5. Emily Jelly's parents were James and Jane McArdle, The 1869 will of James McArdle describes seven Douglas dwellings held at the time of his death, including three in James Street. There is nothing in Jane mcArdle's will suggesting that Emily was left property, rather she received wearing apparel and a watch but it cannot be a coincidence that the McArdles had six children
  6. Curiously, James Jelly purchased a Douglas property from Elizabeth Mylrea, widow of Thomas, in 1854. And just as curious, John Mylrea the bookseller was the executor of the Jellys' wills. Neither of these Mylrea families was linked to John Mylrea of Cronk Urleigh although they were related to eachother - John Mylrea the bookseller was the youngest son of Elizabeth & Thomas Mylrea
  7. Also curiously, Jane McArdle was a Barrie ie. the same name as John's widowed wife, although whether Jane was related to Robert Barrie, Margaret's first husband, is unknown
