MARY ANN COWLEY als MYLREA from DANIEL CANNAN

Mortgage - 1905 (Douglas)

Know all men by these presents that I Mary Ann Cowley of Cronk Urleigh in the parish of Michael doth hereby own and acknowledge herself to be and stand justly endebted unto David Cannan of Michael village in the full and just sum of one hundred pounds sterling for value received in cash to the repayment whereof with interest thereon at the rate of three pounds and fifteen shillings per centum per annum, payable yearly and all costs and charges attending these presents well and truly to be made unto the said Daniel Cannan, his executors, administrators and assigns, the said Mary Ann Cowley doth hereby bind and oblige herself, her heirs, executors, administrators and assigns firmly by these presents

And for the further and better security of the said Daniel Cannan, his executors, administrators and assigns in the repayment of the said principal sum of one hundred pounds with all interest, costs and charges as aforesaid

Further know ye that the said Mary Ann Cowley hath given, granted, transferred, assigned and passed over in security and by these presents doth give, grant, transfer, assign and pass over in security to the said Daniel Cannan all and singular that dwelling house, yard, buildings and premises situate and being No 17 of Wellington Square in the town of Douglas, now occupied by Bernard Rogers as tenant

To have and to hold the said property and every part thereof with all rights and appurtenances thereto belonging unto the said Daniel Cannon, his executors, administrators and assigns until the said principal sum of one hundred pounds with all interest, costs, and charges be fully paid off, discharged and satisfied

And it is provided that three months notice shall be given by either party to the other before the said principal money is called in or paid off

And it is further provided that the owner for the time being of the property shall insure and keep insured from loss by fire the said dwelling house and will at any time when required by the mortgagee produce the receipt for the last due premium on such insurance and in case or neglect or failure so to do, then the mortgagee may effect and continue such insurance for his own protection and all monies paid in respect of such insurance shall be deemed part of the costs and charges of these presents and shall be repaid from time to time along with interest which shall accrue due hereunder

And for the true and faithful performance hereof, the said Mary Ann Cowley doth hereby bind and oblige herself, her heirs, executors, administrators and assigns firmly by these presents

Acknowledgement, Registration follows

Know all men by these presents that Daniel Cannan of the Village in the parish of Kirk Michael in the Isle of Man doth acknowledge to have received from Mary Ann Cowley of Cronk Urleigh in the aforesaid parish of Kirk Michael, widow, and to have been fully paid and satisfied the full amount of the principal money and all interest, costs and charges due and owing in respect of a certain Deed of Bond and Security bearing date the 19th day of June 1905 granted and passed by the said Mary Ann Cowley to the said Daniel Cannan for the principal sum of one hundred pounds, repayable with interest, costs and charges and made chargeable upon all and singular a certain dwelling house, yard, buildings and premises situate No 17 Wellington Square in the town of Douglas on the Isle of Man

And the said Daniel Cannan doth hereby require and direct that the said Deed of Bond and Security dated the 19th day of June 1905 be and stand cancelled upon record.

  2. Mary Ann was the daughter of John Mylrea and Margaret Barrie als Brew
  3. She was a widow, after her husband died in 1900
  4. A week after she finalised the purchase of her half-sister's share of the dwelling, Mary Ann contracted a mortgage, the subject of this document
  5. She held the mortgage for 6 years. When she paid it off, she was the absolute owner not only of the expanded Cronk Urleigh holding now over 20 acres, but the Wellington Square dwelling and the Park Road dwelling in Douglas (Park Road was destined for her son William but he would ultimately died in WW1 and the dwelling pass to surviving son John Stanley Richard Cowley)
