Purchase - 1905 (Douglas)

Know all men by these presents that Elizabeth Corlett, of Mysore cottage in the town of Ramsey, widow of Edward Corlett, and her son Edward Corlett of No 5 Tulley St, Upper Broughton, Manchester, joiner, and Eleanor Corlett his wife for and in consideration of the sum of seventy five pounds sterling to them paid and satisfied by Mary Ann Cowley of Cronk Urleigh in the parish of Michael, widow, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged

Have given, granted, bargained, alienated and sold and by these presents doth give, grant, bargain, alienate and forever absolutely sell and convey unto the said Mary Ann Cowley, her heirs and assigns, all and singular the one undivided share or moeity of that certain house, yard, buildings and premises situate and being No 17 in Wellington Square in the town of Douglas now occupied by Bernard Rogers as tenant

To have and to hold the said property and every part thereof with all rights and appurtenances of every kind and description to the same belonging or therewith usually held, occupied or enjoyed and the whole of the right, title and interest both legal and equitable of the said several parties in and unto the same unto her, the said Mary Ann Cowley, her heirs and assigns, from the day of the date hereof absolutely forever, subject nevertheless to the payment of the rates, taxes and public burdens chargeable upon the said property, according to the laws and customs of the Isle of Man

And the said several parties do hereby covenant to and with the said Mary Ann Cowley, her heirs and assigns, that they have good right and lawful authority to sell and convey the premises aforesaid, and that they and each of them will warrant and defend the same unto her, the said Mary Ann Cowley, her heirs and assigns, from and against the claim and demand of all persons whomsoever

And for the true and faithful performance hereof, the said Elizabeth Corlett and Edward Corlett and his wife do and each of them doth hereby bind and oblige themselves and their respective heirs, executors, administrators and assigns firmly by these presents

In witness whereof they have hereunto subscribed their names this 13th day of June 1905.

  2. Mary Ann was the daughter of John Mylrea and Margaret Barrie als Brew
  3. She was a widow, after her husband died in 1900
  4. Elizabeth Corlett was Mary Ann's half sister. Elizabeth had inherited control of half of the dwelling while Mary Ann inherited one fourth share from her mother and she purchased the remaining fourth from her brother, John, in 1902
  5. This contract gave Mary Ann Cowley 100% ownership of the Wellington Square property, which had originally been purchased by Elizabeth's father, Robert Barrie, in 1840
  6. Mary Ann immediately mortgaged the property, perhaps to get ready cash to pay her sister, to Daniel Cannan. The debt was cancelled six years later
