MARY ANN COWLEY als MYLREA & husband to Thomas Kewley

Purchase - 1900 (Douglas)

Know all men by these presents that John Corkill Watterson Cowley of Cronk Urleigh in the parish of Michael, farmer, and Mary Ann Cowley his wife, in consideration of the sum of one hundred and forty two pounds and ten shillings to him in hand now paid by Thomas Kewley of Ridgeway Street in the town of Douglas, provision merchant, (there receipt of which said sum is hereby acknowledged) doth hereby give, grant and forever absolutely sell and convey unto the said Thomas Kewley, his heirs and assigns, all and singular that dwelling house and premises situate and being numbered twenty seven Barrack Street in the said town of Douglas and parish of Onchan, bounded on the north by Barrack Street aforesaid, on the south by the property of William Collister, George Hussey and William Gell, on the east by the property of George Sheard and William Kinley, and on the west by the property of Robert Corlett, together with all ways, waters, watercourses, easements, rights, members, privileges and appurtenances to the same belonging or in anywise appertaining, and together with the whole right, title and interest of the said John Corkill Watterson Cowley therein and thereto

To have and to hold the same with all appurtenances aforesaid unto the said thomas Kewley, his heirs and assigns from the day of the date hereof absolutely, he the said Thomas Kewley,his heirs and assigns, yielding and paying the Lord's or Chief rent and also doing, paying and performing all boons, suits and other services annually or otherwise incumbent thereon, and the said John Corkill Watterson Cowley for himself, his heirs, executors and administrators doth hereby covenant with the said Thomas Kewley, his heirs and assigns, that he the said John Corkill Watterson Cowley hath good right, full power and lawful authority to sell and convey the hereinbefore described premises in manner aforesaid and that he and his aforesaids shall and will well and truly and at all times warrant maintain, uphold and defend the same unto the said Thomas Kewley, his heirs and assigns, from and against the claim, challenge and demand of all and every persons or person whomsoever

  2. Mary Ann was the daughter of John Mylrea and Margaret Barrie als Brew
  3. She married John Corkhill Watterson Cowley in 1891. He was a school teacher but had been a theology student when they met
  4. This contract is for the sale of the premises at 27 Barrack St in Douglas, one of four properties mentioned in the 1887 will of John Mylrea but the sale subject to a Court Order for permission to sell because John, one of the owners, was severely disabled and the Courts had to approve any disposal of his assets
  5. How these four dwellings came into the possession of John Mylrea (father of Mary Ann and John, and step father of Elizabeth) is not clear but it is most likely that they came via his wife Margaret Mylrea als Barrie als Brew
  6. The curious aspect of this sale is that the property had been sold two months previously, but Mary Ann purchased it two months later then sold it to Thomas Kewley the same day - all three transactions at the same price
