NOTES

  1. Brondall
  2. Richard was buried 7th December 1749, Lonan
  3. Son of David McYlerye & Margaret als Cowne, born about 1690
  4. Married three times: first to Isabel Moore 1714-1730), second to Ellinor Ffargher (1732-1739); third to Mary Quark 20th July (1740 -1749)
  5. In his will, Richard named nine children: Richard, Thomas, William, John, David, Margaret, Isabel, Catherine & Ann
  6. John (MYLROI) b1724 & David (MYLROIE) b1727, aughters Margaret MYLRIOYE (1718), Isabel MYLROIY (1721), Catherine, Anne (no baptism record) first marriage - although Anne might be the McYLROY child baptised in 1730 with father Edward (not the first time such a mistake occurred in the parish registers)(first marriage)
  7. Richard (McLEROY) b November 1736 (second marriage)
  8. Thomas baptised 1743? & William (MYLEROI) b Sept 1746 (third marriage)
  9. Richard left his share of the family estate to the only child of his second marriage, a son named Richard jnr, even though he had two older sons from his first marriage who became guardians to Richard jnr, the heir. His oldest son John however was entitled to his mother's half of the family estate. As well, because Richard snr had married a third time, the entitlement of the child of the second married was reduced: Ellin a second wife of Richard Mylroi dying intestate, administration was granted to her only son Richard and Richard the father having married a third wife was only entitled to one eighth part which he devised to the said Richard his son who thereby was entitled to three eighth part of the said 16s 9d as by the said will and decree produced in Court. The said John who was entitled to one moiety of the said rent and the said Richard Mylroi who by deed dated 17rh Dec 1751 sold their several and respective shares to said William Crow (LV May 1760)
  10. The process of settling the legacies from his will reads as if there was ill-will between (at least) the oldest sons (from Richard's first marriage) and Mary, Richard's third wife - "If there's trouble, get a soldier"
  11. The Cowin mentioned in Richard's will might be his brother-in-law or a nephew since his sister Margaret married Daniel Cowne in 1709
  12. Mary Quark disappeared from the parish recirds, although she is mentioned in notes as late as Dec 1761 at the end of the will of John QUark, her father
  13. In 1757, Richard jnr was living in Douglas. His half brothers continued to live in Lonan, and raise families there
  14. Apart from his participation in the 1757 sale of the land he inherited, the adult existence of Richard jnr on the IOM is not recorded
  15. Recent DNA studies show that this family have Viking heritage, as opposed to the Mylreas who are Celtic - his father David was not a Mylrea after all, despite the similarity in surname
  16. Lonan parish registers from the early 1700s are far from complete so extreme caution must be exercised when attempting to draw conclusions about these families and their relationships
