THOMAS MYLREA to WILLIAM KEWLEY

Sale - 1859 (Douglas)

This indenture made this twenty third day of February one thousand eight hundred and fifty nine between Thomas Mylrea of the parish of Michael, miller, and Mary Elizabeth his wife of the first part, John Matthews of the town of Douglas, baker, heir at law of the late John Cain and Jane Cain of the said town and Hannah Matthews his wife of the second part, and William Kewley of the town of Douglas and late of the Kerroo Dhoo in the parish of Conchan of the third part

Witnesseth that the said Thomas Mylrea and Mary Elizabeth his wife, and John Matthews and Hannah Matthews his wife for and in consideration of the sum of ninety seven pounds and ten shillings to them in hand paid by William Kewley the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged

Have given, granted, bargained and sold and by these presents do give, grant, bargain and forever absolutely sell unto the said William Kewley all and singular a certain dwelling house, back yard and premises situate in Senna Lane in or adjoining the town of Douglas, bounded on the south west by the public street, on the north west by the property of John Nash, on the north east by a back lane, and on the south east by the property of William Kelly, beingthe whole of the property devised by the late John Cain and Jane Cain to the said Mary Elizabeth Mylrea by their last will and testament bearing date the sixth day of December one thousand eight hundred and fifty four, a memorial of which will has been duly recorded in the Registry Office of Deeds in the town of Douglas in terms of the act of Tynwald in that case made and provided

To have and to hold the said dwelling house and premises with the back yard thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining with all ways, waters, watercourses, easements and appertenances thereunto belonging unto the said William Kewley, his heirs and assigns from the day of the date hereof forever, he the said William Kewley, his heirs and assigns yielding and paying yearly and every year the Lord's rent, road labour and church assessment and doing and performaing all boons, suits and services annually incumbent on the said sold premises

And the said Thomas Mylrea and Mary Elizabeth Mylrea do hereby covenant and engage to and with the said William Kewley that they have good right, full power and lawful authority to sell and convey the premises aforesaid in manner aforesaid, and that they, their heirs, executors and administrators shall and will maintain and defend the same to the said William Kewley, his heirs and assigns from and against the claim, challenge or demand of all persons whomsoever

And for the true and faithful performance hereof the said thomas Mylrea and Mary Elizabeth Mylrea do bind and oblige themselves, their heirs, executors and assigns to the said William Kewley, his heirs and assigns firmly by these presents

In witness whereof the said Thomas Mylrea and Mary Elizabeth Mylrea his wife, and John Matthews and Elizabeth [sic] Matthews his sife, and the said John Kewley have hereunto subscribed their names the day and date first above written

NOTES

  1. This contract is for the sale of 3 Senna Lane, a dwelling left to Mary Elizabeth by her parents
  2. John Matthews, the heir at law, was a nephew of Mary Elizabeth, and was probably living with his Caine grandparents, having lost both his parents, one of whom was Mary Elizabeth's sister
  3. The income from this sale allowed Thomas Mylrea to purchase a share of "Harry's" mill in Michael
  4. For £100, Thomas acquired a third portion of "Harry's mill (rent = 4s of 12s) from John Cain, cooper, of Kirk Michael village in 1858 (LV1860). Also in the purchase was a small piece of Dromrewaigh quarterland (rent = 1/3d). The vendor John Cain, was no relation to John Cain, Thomas's father in law who left Mary Elizabeth the dwelling in Senna Lane
  5. Thomas and his family had migrated to Michael in about 1844, after living originally at Union Mills outside Douglas where he was already a miller
  6. Thomas, baptised 1815, was the oldest son of Thomas Mylrea & Margaret als Cowin of Braddan. He had two brothers - Philip the school master at Malew, and William the blacksmith at Andreas
  7. Thomas was also a Methodist preacher as was his father, and brother William
  8. He married Mary Elizabeth Caine 1839, Braddan
  9. Seven children: Jane (baptised 20th May 1840), Margaret (3rd April 1842), Mary Elizabeth (3rd February 1844), John Thomas (22nd November 1845), Sarah (23rd January 1848), William (1st March 1850), Philip Caine (5th May 1853) - 5 survived
    • Jane m William Callister, went to live in the USA
    • Mary Elizabeth m John Caine, eventually went to the UK
    • John Thomas m Jane Stowell, remained on the IOM
    • William m Elizabeth Horsley, went to the UK
    • Philip Caine m Elizabeth Dickinson went, to the USA
  10. His son and heir at law, John Thomas, became a ship owner and corn dealer in Castletown, and died at the relatively early age of 48
  11. On John Thomas's death, the Michael estate went to his wife, Jane Stowell (LV 1898), and when she died in 1900, it passed to their son Thomas who was still a minor (LV 1901)
  12. Young Thomas married in 1904 at the age of 21, but tragically his wife died a few months later.
  13. He left for the US soon afterwards where he married Bertha Margaret Thomas and became a father to two daughters. The family made its home in Oklahoma
  14. In 1908, Thomas sold his 1/3 share of "Harry's" corn mill that his grandfather had purchased in 1858
