EDWARD MYLREA to GEORGE PALMER

Sale - 1856 (Douglas)

Know all men by these presents that I Edward Mylrea with the consent of my wife Eleanor Mylrea for and in consideration of the just and full sum of sixty pounds sterling money

Have given, granted, bargained and sold and by these presents do give, grant, bargain and forever absolutely sell unto George Palmer of the town of Liverpool, his heirs, executors and assigns all and singular a certain dwelling house and back house, yard and premises to the same belonging, situate in Castle Street in the town of Douglas and bounded by the property of Thomas Quayle on the south, and the shore on the east, and the property of Philip Killey on the south, and the street on the west

To have and to hold unto him the said George Palmer, his heirs, executors and assigns from the date hereof, and I the said Edward Mylrea doth for myself, my heirs, executors and assigns covenant and engage to and with the said George Palmer, his heirs, his executors and assigns to awarrant and defend the said sold premises against the challenge or demand of any person or persons whomsoever

And for the true and faithful performance hereof, I the said Edward Mylrea do bind myself, my heirs, executors and assigns unto the said George Palmer, his heirs, executors and assigns in and under the penalty and forfeiture of one hundred and twenty pounds to be levied and paid according to law

I the aforesaid Edward Mylrea do acknowledge to have received the consideration money of the foregoing Deed of Sale, namely the sum of sixty pounds, as witness my subscription this 29th October one thousand eight hundred and fifty six. Edward Mylrea

William Moore one of the witnesses to the foregoing deed, who is known to me, made oath on the Holy Evangelist that Edward Mylrea and Ellen Mylrea the executing parties thereto duly signed the same in his presence and in presence of Matthias Cain, the other witness. Before me Stenhouse Wilson

I certify that the foregoing deed was this day at the hour of twelve o'clock now received by me at this office for the purpose of being registered and received according to law and that the same is entered in the Requisition Book 4 page 120 No 1198. T C B Watts, Deputy Registrar

NOTES

  1. George Palmer was the son in law of Edward Mylrea (3), married to Edward's oldest daughter Margaret b1823
  2. Witness William Moore was probably the brother in law of the vendor, married to his sister, Jane
  3. Edward Mylrea's father, also named Edward (2) had purchased a property along the seashore in Douglas in 1804, and presumably Edward snr (2) and his wife Margaret lived in the house until the death of Margaret in 1849
  4. The house cost £100 in 1804, and was sold for £60 in 1856
  5. The house had originally been left to the oldest son of Edward (3), also named Edward (4)
  6. Edward (4) was killed in an accident in 1840 in Liverpool at the age of 16 (Mona's Herald, 17/3/1840) and the property reverted to Edward (3) in his mother's 1849 will
  7. George Palmer married Margaret Mylrea in 1843, after her parents had migrated to Liverpool

  10. This Mylrea family had a long history in Douglas, stretching back to the original family of Thomas Mylrea and Margaret Cowin. Edward (1) b 1743 became a wheelright in Lonan, Edward (2) b1767 was a sea captain, Edward (3) b 1796 was a shoemaker, and Edward (4) was working on a construction site when he died in his teens
  11. George Palmer was a harbour master
