GEORGE PALMER to Elizabeth Cowley

SALE - 1861 (Douglas)

Knw all men by these presents that George Palmer, of the town of Liverpool, Pier Master, and Margaret Palmer formerly Mylrea his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and eighty pounds to them in hand paid by Elizabeth Cowley of Strand Street in the town of Douglas

Have given, granted, bargained and sold and by these presents to give, grant, bargain and forever absolutely sell unto the said Elizabeth Cowley all and singular a certain dwelling house, back house, yard and premises situate in Castle Street in the town of Douglasthe same being bounded on the south west by the property of Thomas Quay, on the south east by the sea shore, on the north east by the property of Thomas Killey and on the north .. by the public street

To have and to hold the said dwelling house, back house, yard and premises situate in Castle Street aforesaid, with all ways, waters, water courses, easement and appurtenances belonging or in anywise appertaining or there... usually held, occupied and enjoyed unto the said Elizabeth Cowley, her heirs and assigns from the day of the date hereof forever, she the said Elizabeth Cowley, her heirs and assigns thereforth yielding and paying the Lord's Rent, Towns Rate, church assessment and doing and performing all boons, suits and services annually incumbent on the said sold premises

And the said George Palmer doth covenant and engage, for himself, his executors and administrators to and with the said Elizabeth Cowley, her executors, administrators and assigns that he hath, with the consent aforesaid, good right, full power and lawful authority to sell and convey the premises aforesaid in manner aforesaid, and that he and they shall and will warrant, maintain, uphold and defend the same to her and them against the claim, challenge and demand of all persons whomsoever

And for the true and faithful performance hereof, the said George Palmer and Margaret his wife do hereby bind and oblige themselves, their executors and administrators unto the said Elizabeth Cowley, her heirs and assigns firmly by these presents

In witness whereof I George Palmer and Margaret his wife have hereunto subscribed their names, this the ninth day of October one thousand eight hundred and sixty one (1861). George Palmer, Margaret Palmer

NOTES

  1. At the time of this sale, George Palmer and his wife owned 100% of the Castle Street dwelling
    • One half share of the property had been inherited by Palmer's wife on the death of her brother in 1840
    • George Palmer purchased the other half share of the Castle St dwelling in 1856 from his father in law, Edward Mylrea, who had inherited that share from his mother in 1849
  2. Edward Mylrea snr had purchased the dwelling in 1804, and in his will, Edward snr and his wife had bequeathed it to their grandson. However, the boy was killed in an accident in 1840 in Liverpool (Mona's Herald, 17/3/1840) and the the boy's share from his grandfather's will went to his sister, Margaret
  3. The house cost £100 in 1804, and Palmer sold the property for £180 in 1861
  4. George Palmer was a pier master in Liverpool
