NOTES

  1. Cronk Urleigh
  2. Mary Ann was the daughter of John Mylrea and Margaret Barrie als Brew
  3. She married John Corkhill Watterson Cowley in 1891. He was a theology student at the time and later a teacher
  4. Their address in this contract is given as Bucks Road in Douglas but it must have been a short term arrangement because Mary Ann inherited the Cronk Urleigh estate when her father died in 1887 and subsequent census collections show that Mary Ann remained living there
  5. This premises at 12 James Street was one of four mentioned in the will of her father, John Mylrea, in 1887. There is no documentaty evidence as to how the property was acquired. It was not one of the dwellings inherited by the Barrie girls
  6. Her half-sister Elizabeth Corlett als Barrie sold her 1/4 share in the premises some months previously
  7. Comparing the two sales - Elizabeth 6/24 share of the whole for £69/15/- and Mary Ann 7/24 share of the whole for £84/3/6
  8. John her brother received £37/17/- from the Town Commissioners, which curiously is half what Elizabeth received. It is curious that Mary Ann received a significantly larger share than her sibling John, and slightly larger share than her half-sister
