PHILIP MOORE to CHANCERY COURT

To the honourable Cornelius Smith, Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor of this Isle

The humble petition of Philip Moore a minor of the age of sixteen years or thereabouts

Showeth

That your petitioner by the death of his father Philip Moore of Peeltown Esq, late deceased, is entitled to considerable property within this Isle which, from his non age, he is incapable of managing and which requires the immediate superintendence of some proper person

That your petitioner humbly prays leave to recommend John Kelly of Castletown, advocate, the nearest relative of your petitioner in the island and William Geneste of Douglas, merchant, as proper and eligible persons to be appointed guardians of your petitioner

He therefore humbly prays that your honour may be pleased to appoint the said persons or such others as may be deemed meet guardians of your petitioner and he will pray etc etc

Ordered that this petition do come on to be heard at a Chancery Court to be holden at Castle Rushen on Thursday next whereof all proper parties and persons to have due notice Given this 30th April 1817 at a special Chancery Court holden at Castle Rushen the 3rd May 1817

Upon hearing the petition and consideration had thereof it appears to be necessary that some proper persons be appointed guardians over the petitioner and John Kelly of Castletown esq and William Geneste of Douglas, merchant, having been proposed to this Court as proper persons for that purpose, they the said John Kelly and William Geneste were accordingly sworn in Court well and truly to administer the estates, real and personal, of the said minor to be to his greatest benefit and advantage and it is hereby

NOTES

  1. Philip was the oldest son of Philp Moore & Jane Price Wilson, and born 1801 in German
  2. When Philip's grandfather Sir George Moore died in 1787, he left his grandsons Philip (Philip's father) and William the Douglas properties that he (Sir George) had purchased from Charles Killey jnr in 1768 (see LV 1788). This was quite an extensive portfolio of cottages and intacks
  3. Philip married first Ann Farrant in 1820 who died soon afterwards, then Margaret Mylrea, daughter of William Mylrea & Jane Plaice, in 1829
  4. Three children: George 1828 (illegitimate), Philip St Andrew (1831), Jane Price (1835)
  5. Philip died 1836 and Margaret remarried Thomas Graves McMurray in 1842
  6. Daughter Jane Price Moore married John Kelly, the advocate, who might have been her guardian (see 1845 petition) or her guardian's son

1839 Enrolled Deeds 1839 078 John Kelly to Robt Stewart sale [Peel]dated 24 Sep 1819; Recites that Philip Moore (late of Peel, decd) + wife Jane Price Moore borrowed £350 (Brit) from Esther Gawne (spinster, Rushen) [CTD Mic 1811 39] giving as security the stables, dwelling house etc in Peel by deed dated 11 Apr 1811, Moore also borrowed £87 from John Kelly (mariner, Peel) giving as security a house adj Peel Quay + backyard etc at the time in occupation of Robert Grant (innkeeper) by deed dated 8 Nov 1814; Moore d 1815 leaving premises to son Philip Moore (guardians Wm Geneste of Douglas + John Kelly of Castletown)
